I'm Matthew McWilliam. I run a web design and digital marketing business, and I've been building websites for most of my life.
The first one was as a teenager in Ohio: a music site called Xtreme Music Lists, with a banner-ad network I ran on the side to pay for the hosting. I didn't know it at the time, but that was the whole job, in miniature. Make something people want, find them, and figure out how it pays for itself.
I started MJM Design in Cleveland in November 2005 and moved it to Columbus in 2009. Most of the work is WordPress sites for small businesses, medical groups, universities and non-profits. The part I like is that they all want the same thing: a site that works, that they can afford, and someone who answers the phone.
What I actually care about is the person on the other end of it. That you understand what I am doing and why. That it keeps working after I am gone. That when you call, you get me, and if something is not worth your money, I will say so.
Somewhere along the way I started building things for myself. A job board for Columbus that a person still reviews by hand. A rent-collection platform. Seven apps on the App Store, the first in 2016 and three more this summer. A WordPress plugin. They're all on the shipped page with the dates, because dates are the honest kind of proof.
When I'm not working I'm usually on a trail with a camera, and those photos have their own site.
If you've searched my name and landed here, thanks for taking the time to look around. Say Hello and I'll reply myself, usually within a business day.

Timeline
How I got from there to here.
- 1990sOhio
First website, as a teenager.
A music site called Xtreme Music Lists, plus a banner-ad network to cover the hosting.
- 2005Cleveland
Started MJM Design.
November 5th. Do good work, and treat every client like their business actually matters. That is still the day job.
- 2009Columbus
Moved to Columbus, and started two things I still look after.
CbusJobs.com, a job board where a real person reads every listing before it goes up. And Rent Merchant, for landlords who would rather not chase checks.
- 2016App Store
First apps.
Cat Facts Texts in March, the old prank made real. Velvet Rope Vegas in September. Both still get updates; Cat Facts got its third major version this June.
- 2020
Uplifting News.
A feed of good news only.
- 2026
The busiest summer in years.
Three new apps in June and July: Lit.bio, Roman Empire Daily, and the RentMerchant app. Donor Merchant, a free WordPress donation plugin, in August. And this site, rebuilt into plain HTML.
